The beginning of this place was in 1852 when Thomas Easterbrook built a storehouse. A hotel followed the year after. Andrew Kerr was the first hotel-keeper. The town hall was built in 1875 on the east side of the road. It was later moved to its present location. A veterinary service has been located in the hamlet since 1884.
In 1900 a large fire destroyed many buildings – homes and businesses. In those times as there were no phones, a novel scheme was originated. “Someone secured two large pieces of cardboard and painted in red “Fire in Brookville”. Br McTagart’s white horse was then secured and one of the cards strapped safely on each side. The horse was then ridden to Campbellville to spread the alarm. When it reached its destination, the horse was turned loose and it headed straight for home. This caused quite a sensation.”
