Churches

The first thing done by the early settlers, as soon as there were large enough settlements on farms and in the villages, was to establish schools and churches.  The schools were mostly built of logs and of frame construction; the churches, mostly stone and frame construction.  These centres of faith and worship have been at the heart of the community through the years. While some of the churches have closed their doors over the years, the following congregations are still alive and vibrant to this day:

Nassagaweya Presbyterian Church

The oldest of the churches in Nassagaweya is Nassagaweya Presbyterian Church (NPC). NPC stands in the heart of Nassagaweya, located at 3097 15th Sideroad, just east of Guelph Line (map).  It was established in 1836, but it was twenty-five years later in 1861 that the stone building still in use today was built. The picturesque church on the hill, along with its historic cemetery, offers a glimpse back to a simpler time.

However, while proud of their long-standing heritage in this community, NPC doesn’t stand on tradition, preferring instead to connect with and serve today’s people in today’s context. Long-standing and familiar groups/happenings like Sunday worship, the Women’s Association, and community meals, stand together with community Bible study groups and children’s and youth programmes for all ages. In short, NPC is a small, community-oriented, historic congregation that is exploring what it means to live as a follower of Jesus in the here and now.

You can contact NPC and their pastor, Rev. Sean Howard, by email at info@nassagaweya.com, on the web at www.nassagaweya.com, by phone at (905) 854-1055, by mail at RR#1, Campbellville, ON L0P1B0, or in person on Sundays at 10 am.

St. John's Anglican Church

Ebenezer Church

The church in Moffat, built in 1877, as of 1950, had already been closed for several years.  It was described as a very nice brick church with services held only occasionally by some other denomination.

A Presbyterian Church was built in Campbellville in 1891. It was described as a very large brick building, modern in design.
