Quite a number of Nassagaweya’s young men joined the various forces, reportedly acquitting themselves well and bringing high honour to the township. The cenotaph was built on the corner lot of the farm owned by D Hutchinson, and donated free by him, to honour those who did not return.  The amount of $3600 to build the structure was raised by donations from citizens of the township.
